Job Duties and Preferred Qualifications:

The Virginia Beach Police Department’s Analytical Services Unit (ASU) is part of the Analytics & Real-Time Intelligence Center (ARTIC) within the Support Division. The Police Data Analysis Supervisor will serve as the immediate supervisor of seven analysts within the ASU. The Analytical Services Unit is dedicated to efficiently delivering accurate and precise data analysis, serving as the departmental subject matter experts on crime trends and patterns to support problem-solving efforts that suppress and prevent criminal behavior. ASU leverages the use of report automation techniques (SQL, Python, ArcGIS, etc.) to develop analytical products that aid operational effectiveness. The unit continuously adapts to deliver clear, concise, and actionable intelligence that enriches decision making. In collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, ASU strengthens the Virginia Beach Police Department’s mission to provide safer communities and improve quality of life.

General responsibilities for the position include:

- Directing and managing staff responsible for product/solution development, automation techniques, data process modeling, querying relevant data, computerized crime mapping, and preparation of various reports.
- Serving in a lead role coordinating the department’s analytical functions
- Establish best methods to support operation staff through strategic initiatives
- Interact with Department supervision to understand analytical functions/needs
- Research and develop best practices specific to the assigned unit
- Supervise and develop employees

Hours:  The hours for this position are Monday-Friday, 0800-1630.  These hours may very due to departmental need or special projects/assignments.

Special Instructions/Requirements:

- CJIS/VCIN/NCIC certification is required, in addition to the successful completion of a background check, candidates must have U.S. citizenship or be a lawful resident of the United States and eligible for naturalization.
- Must successfully complete a police background investigation, including polygraph examination.
- All employees may be expected to work hours more than their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or city-wide emergencies.

Critical Criteria:  Candidates must have documented experience as a data analyst and experience with the use of automation tools and process improvement to be selected for an interview.

Additional Preferences:  In addition to the minimum requirements and critical criteria, the ideal candidate for this position will have experience listed in the preferences below. Candidates with the preferred experience should ensure the information is provided in the application.

Drugs:  Any involvement in the sale of illegal drugs as an adult.   Any illegal use or possession of any illegal drug, including but not limited to heroin, cocaine, hallucinogens, or any derivative thereof (except marijuana) within the last five years.  Illegal possession of anabolic steroids within the last 36 months.

Minimum Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications: Requires a Bachelor’s degree and four (4) years of experience in fields such as computer science, geography, criminal justice, information technology, business administration, or public administration OR an equivalent combination of education (above high school level) and/or experience equivalent to eight (8) years in fields utilizing the knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with this position.

Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
