About the job

About City Detect
City Detect harnesses AI and computer vision to revolutionize urban management by using sensors to map the physical world and help communities respond to issues and track longitudinal changes. Founded in 2021, we recently raised a Series A and are actively partnering with major municipalities across Texas, California, Florida, and beyond to create cleaner, safer, and more livable cities. We value responsible practices, cutting-edge innovation, and collaborative community partnerships as we scale our platform and shape the future of urban living through technology.
🧭
Role Summary
You'll be responsible for the architecture, development, testing, and maintenance of our full stack systems, with particular emphasis on building intuitive, well-designed user interfaces — including interactive maps and geospatial data visualizations. Working closely with founders and team leads, you'll ensure our frontend experiences, APIs, and data pipelines are performant, reliable, and delightful to use as we grow.
🛠️
What You'll Do
Design and build responsive, accessible user interfaces using modern frontend frameworks (React or similar), including interactive maps and spatial data explorers
Build data visualizations and dashboards — including geospatial/mapping interfaces — that help users and internal teams understand complex data
Translate designs and product requirements into polished, production-ready UI components, exercising good design judgment along the way
Build and maintain serverless API services using Python and FastAPI on AWS Lambda
Design database schemas and queries in AWS RDS Aurora PostgreSQL, including spatial data with PostGIS
Develop and optimize ETL pipelines for geospatial and business data
Monitor, troubleshoot, and improve frontend and backend performance
Establish best practices for UI architecture, component design, and frontend performance
✅
Requirements
Thrives in fast-paced startup environments
, working closely with small, cross-functional teams to ship high-quality work quickly
Solid professional experience as a full stack or frontend-leaning software engineer — mid-level through senior, calibrated on technical depth and design judgment
Strong production experience with React (or similar) and modern JavaScript/TypeScript
Strong eye for design
— comfortable turning mockups/wireframes into pixel-accurate, responsive UI, and able to make sound design decisions independently
Solid experience with Python or similar for API development and backend work
Experience designing and building RESTful APIs
Working knowledge of relational databases (PostgreSQL or similar)
Experience with cloud platforms, particularly AWS (Lambda, RDS/Aurora, S3)
Experience with data visualization and/or geospatial/mapping technologies
(D3.js, deck.gl, Mapbox, Leaflet, PostGIS, or similar) is a strong plus and directly relevant to our product
Solid understanding of software engineering fundamentals — data structures, algorithms, system design, maintainability
🌟
Nice to Have
Experience processing and validating large-scale (nation-size or larger) geospatial datasets
Familiarity with OpenStreetMap (OSM) data ingestion, processing, and quality assurance
Experience with custom map tile generation and serving (e.g., vector tiles, H3) for large or high-traffic datasets
Experience with design systems and component libraries (e.g., Tailwind, shadcn/ui, Storybook)
Experience with serverless architectures and event-driven systems
Familiarity with FastAPI or similar modern Python web frameworks
Understanding of software security best practices, including authentication and authorization

What to Expect in Our Hiring Process
Our hiring process is designed to be thoughtful, efficient, and human. Candidates typically move through a short series of interviews, starting with a 30-minute phone screening, followed by a portfolio/design review and one or two technical conversations, a reference check, and a final interview with our CEO.
We focus on cultural alignment, real-world technical understanding, design judgment, and career goals—not coding puzzles or LeetCode-style tests. We'll be in touch with updates after each stage as promptly as we can. If an offer is extended, the role begins with a 30-day trial period where you'll take ownership of a meaningful project and receive clear, ongoing feedback to ensure mutual fit.
Due to regulatory and operational requirements, we are currently only considering candidates based in the United States.
